Tour A9 (A6): Mongolian wilderness adventure 2008
Traveling around Mongolia in four wheel drive jeeps or vans we stay in tents and occasionally in gers with nomadic families en route. This trip is not for those who want luxury – there are no facilities so you will need to wash with bowls of water. We visit some truly spectacular regions, go hiking in the mountains, stop at small rivers and streams to fish or swim, relax in the sand dunes of the Gobi, visit volcanic lakes and drive across the magnificent Mongolian grasslands.
Day 1: Ulaanbaatar
Tour begins: Transfer to Hotel. City tour includes the dinosaur exhibits at the Museum of Natural History. Dinner at the Modern Nomads restaurant. Overnight in guesthouse. (D)
Days 2-3: middle Gobi deserts Tracking through GOBI Stepper
After the breakfast, drive south through the Gobi , to Mandalgobi. Total track takes 293 km to center of Dundgobi province. This is a long driving day stepper range. The Lunch will be served as picnic on the way. We will stay that night in tent and next overnight in Gobi Ger camp. The dinner will be provided by local hotel. The track will go through the Gobi stepper. (B+L+D)
Travel to the Great GOBI range
Day 4: National park Eagle valley
After breakfast visit the beautiful Eagle Valley, Gurvan Saikhan Uul (about 40 km). The valley is about 10 km long and is completely shaded from the sun in some parts due to the high cliff walls. There you can walk and photograph spectacular local landscapes (Gobi Mountains). At the opening of the valley is a Local Natural History Museum displaying interesting information about the animals of the area. You will return to the Ger camp in the evening for dinner and Overnight in the tent. (B+L+D)
Day 5: Flaming cliffs “Bayanzag” – Dinosaur's native land
After breakfast drive to South Gobi (250km). On the way visit the Flaming cliffs (dinosaur excavation site). Bayanzag is an area of red cliffs, which formed from the erosion of sand and rock over many thousands of years. It also the site of several successful dinosaur excavations. Overnight in the tent. Day 6: Gobi desert Khongorin els
Hike through the valley to reach a glacier that remains there year round. We then drive west to Khingorin els and stay on the edge of some of the largest sand dunes in the Gobi. Overnight in the tent. (B+L+D)
Day 7: Gobi desert
A full free day to explore the desert. Climb a sand dune for one of the most amazing views you will ever see – sand dunes rolling away towards distant Rocky Mountains, or hire a camel and ride across the desert. Overnight in the tent. (B+L+D)
Day 8: Middle Gobi
Today we drive to Middle Gobi (about 250km). Next Stop is the Ongi Cloister ruin. Experienced guides lead our camel riding trips. Overnight in the tent. (B+L+D)
Field trip to the steppe range
Day 9: Kharakhorum, Erdenzuu
After breakfast drive to Kharakhorum (120km). On the way visit Tsetserleg the capital of Arkhangai Province. Overnight near Ger camp Kharakhorum. After breakfast will be visit the Erdenezuu monastery. This Monastery was built in 1586 and is surrounded by a massive 400m-x 400m wall. Not a single nail was used in the construction of the ornate temples, only a few of which remain standing after the communist purges. Mongolia´s ancient capital Kharakhorum, Chinggis Khaan´s fabled city, was founded in 1220 in the ORKHON Valley, at the crossroads of “The Silk Road”. It was from there that the Mongol Empire was governed, until Kublai Khaan moved to Beijing. Meals will be at the Ger camp. Overnight at a Ger camp. (B+L+D)
Day 10: Khorgo National Park
After breakfast we drive to Khorgo, a volcanic lake ringed by stark rocky mountains. Overnight in the tent. (B+L+D)
Day 11: Arrival at Khorgo – Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park.
Today we will visit the clear freshwater Lake Terkhiin White. After breakfast riding or hike to Volcana and visit more attractions. There will be an opportunity to visit local nomadic family, which keeps Yaks. Meals and one overnight will be at the tent near by nomadic family. Overnight in the tent. (B+L+D)
Field trip to the Khangai Mountain and rocky range/zone.
Day 12: Khangai Mountain
Today will be an early start in order to get back to Moron 102km. This is a long driving day through the Khangai Mountain range. We will come to a mountainous valley with forest and a river and make our tented camp for the night. Our guide will cook dinner and breakfast, the next morning, for us. (B+L+D)
Days 13-14: Khubsgul national park
After breakfast drive to the Khatgal town-Tourist camp 102 km. It is another 3 hours drive from Moron to the Lake. Spend 2 days by the lake. You will visit an ancient burial ground with reindeer stones around it. A reindeer men tour could be arranged on a day basis. The route: motor boat trip to the place of destination, then two hours trip on foot or horse and two hours sightseeing. Visit to a nomadic family on yak cart and taste national homemade milk products are offered. Mongolian and European dishes will be in a Traditional Ger Restaurant and overnight will be in tourist camp. Because depending from the cold, mostly rainy and wet temperature of the province it is proved that overnight at the Ger camp (B+L+D)
Day 15: Drive to Amarbaysgalant monastery
After breakfast drive to Amarbaysgalant monastery about 350km. This is a long driving day through the Khangai Mountain range. Lunch served as picnic on the way. We will come to a mountainous valley with forest and a river and make our tented camp for the night. Our guide will cook dinner and breakfast, the next morning, for us. (B+L+D)
Day 16: Visit AMARBAYASGALANT monastery
After breakfast drive to AMARBAYASGALANT monastery 360km. This is a long driving day stepper range. Lunch served as picnic on the way. After lunch drive to introduce with AMARBAYASGALANT monastery 7km. Mongolian wide famous Amarbaysgalant tourist camp which attracts attention of tourists is one of 3 big temple 5 remained whole after 1930s repression was established in 1727-1736 by decree of “Undurgegeen” and has around 30 temples with 4 layers. Dinner at the tourist camp. Overnight is near by tourist camp and makes our tented camp for the night. (B+L+D)
Day 17: Free time in Ulaanbaatar
After breakfast drive to Ulaanbaatar. Total track to Ulaanbaatar takes about 230km. Afternoon you will arrive to Ulaanbaatar city and have lunch at the Modern Nomads restaurant. Today will be a day of guided sightseeing in UB, including shopping and free time. Overnight in guesthouse. (B+L+D)
Day 18:Terelj National Park Outstanding Natural Scenery and wildlife
After breakfast At 10 am you will depart for the Khan Khentii Protected Area (about 60km). Turtle Rock and the dinosaur statues are the main attractions. After field lunch the journey will continue to the Princess Ger camp (32km). Relax in national Ger in the beautiful Khan Khentii Landscape. Bonfire and overnight in Princess Lodge. (B+L+D)
Day 19: Khan Khentii Protected Area
During the day there will be horse riding, or yak cart riding in the mountains and valleys, hiking and visiting the ruins of the Princess temple (8km) and visit in the nomadic Family. Overnight in Princess Lodge. (B+L+D)
Day 20: Ulaanbaatar
After breakfast drive back to Ulaanbaatar (98km). Today will be a day of guided sightseeing in UB, including the Fine Arts Museum, shopping and free time. Dinner and overnight in Guesthouse. (B+L+D)
Day 21: Journey Home
Tour ends: After breakfast at the hotel you will be taken to the train for departure. (B)
